Please arrive at least 20 minutes in advance, as this will give us time to enter or update your information in our computer system. Please bring a complete list of your medications and copies of any test results that you may have related to your visit. You are encouraged to bring a list of questions for your oncologist, who will ensure that all your concerns are addressed to your satisfaction. Consider bringing a friend or loved one along during your first visit, as they may help in retaining the discussed information.
Treatment Plan
Your diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis, will be discussed in detail. Your oncologist may also need to order further tests and will discuss your case with other healthcare professionals involved in your care.If the oncologist advises chemotherapy, you will be given a chemotherapy teaching session the same day or it may be scheduled at your convenience. In most cases you will not receive the actual treatment at your first visit.
Treatment Day and Follow up
Treatment will be scheduled based upon the duration of your specific chemotherapy regimen. It can range from a few minutes to several hours. It is recommended that you eat a light breakfast or lunch before your sessions. However, feel free to bring your own snacks/lunch. Wi-Fi service will also be available, therefore, feel free to bring your laptop, books or movies. Most patients will require a blood test the day before their first chemotherapy session, and weekly thereafter. This is to monitor low blood-counts, which can indicate serious side effects, including fatigue, bruising, and vulnerability to infection.
Most patients will be able to drive after their chemotherapy sessions. However, it is recommended that you bring someone on your first session, since everyone responds differently to treatment. Many patients choose to continue work during treatments as it helps them stay motivated and keep a positive outlook.
